An Introduction

The Renaissance was an era of scientific, artistic, and intellectual expansion. First emerging in Italy in the late 14th century, due partly to its location and its significances as a place of trade, the Renaissance spread across Europe lasting until the 16th century. The Renaissance marked the transition between Medieval and Early Modern Europe. During the Italian Renaissance, theatre, as well as many other art forms flourished. The success of theatre during the Renaissance led to new theatrical innovations. These innovations ranged from new styles of acting such as Commedia Dell'Arte, to creative new and theatrical design elements.
